There’s a reason why we all love a day at the beach. The salty air, the soothing sound of the waves, and the feeling of pebbles underfoot all contribute to a sense of peace and tranquillity. For those living in and around Sussex, there’s a local gem that has just been recognised as one of the best in the country.
Rottingdean beach, a charming pebble beach nestled under chalk cliffs, has been ranked ninth by The Telegraph in its list of “Britain’s 20 greatest beaches”. The ranking was based on the beach’s picturesque scenery, the variety of activities it offers, and its overall location.
Located just four miles east of Brighton’s marina, Rottingdean beach offers a peaceful retreat from the bustling crowds. The undercliff path makes for a pleasant cycle route, leading you straight to this tranquil spot that’s perfect for a refreshing swim.
But it’s not just the serene environment that makes Rottingdean beach special. It also holds a glamorous reputation, having once served as a summer retreat for Hollywood icons like Bette Davis and Cary Grant. In fact, local legend suggests that Cary Grant’s spirit still haunts the bar of the Rottingdean Club.
During the summer, the Rottingdean Terraces come alive with live music and plays performed on the open-air stage overlooking the sea. And for those who fancy a classic seaside meal, The Telegraph recommends the Smugglers pub on the A259 for its “crispy batter fish and proper chips doused in salt and vinegar”.
Rottingdean beach shares the limelight with other top-ranked beaches such as Morecambe North in Lancashire and Saunton Sands in Devon. However, the crown for the best beach overall went to Par, in the Isles of Scilly.
So, if you’re looking for a day out that combines natural beauty, history, and a dash of Hollywood glamour, Rottingdean beach is the place to be. It’s a local treasure that truly deserves its place among Britain’s greatest beaches.
