Brighton and Hove has been named one of the top cities in the world, ranking 169th out of a list of 1,000 of the largest cities globally. This impressive ranking places our vibrant city above notable locations such as Valencia, Warsaw, and Istanbul.
The Global Cities Index, created by Oxford Economics, an independent economic advisory company, evaluates cities based on five key categories: economics, environment, quality of life, governance, and human capital. Brighton and Hove’s strong performance in these areas has earned it the 17th spot in the UK, trailing behind cities like Birmingham, Southampton, and Leicester.
Governance in the index is assessed based on the institutions, political stability, and civil liberties within the city. Human capital, another critical category, focuses on the number of universities and the educational attainment of residents. Brighton and Hove’s rich educational landscape, including esteemed institutions like the University of Brighton, undoubtedly contributed to its high ranking.
Anthony Bernard-Sasges, senior economist at Oxford Economics, highlighted the significance of cities in human civilisation, stating, “Cities are the heart of human civilisation, where innovation, diversity, and progress converge. However, the intricacies of urban dynamics often cloud our understanding of what truly defines the success of a city. Our new Global Cities Index is designed to address this challenge.”
While London is the only UK city to make it into the global top ten, ranking second due to its outstanding performance in the economic and human capital categories, Brighton and Hove’s position at 169th is a testament to its thriving community and dynamic environment.
