Brighton is set to witness an electrifying event this Sunday as dads aged 40 and over take to the stage for a breakdance battle like no other. The “Old School Block Party,” organised by Dad La Soul, aims to raise funds for a project dedicated to combating social isolation among male caregivers. The event will be held at The Brighton Open Air Theatre from 13:00 to 16:00 BST and promises a fun-filled afternoon for all ages.
The event is more than just a dance-off. Alongside the breakdance battles, attendees can look forward to DJ sets, graffiti artists, and circus performers, making it a family-friendly extravaganza. Dan Flanagan, the founder of Dad La Soul, emphasised that the event is about much more than just dancing. “The term dad dancing is used to mock, but plenty of us lads still know how to get down,” he said. “We want to show dads can have fun, be active, and support each other through the ups and downs of fatherhood.”
Dad La Soul was founded seven years ago with the mission of creating a supportive community for dads. The group also hosts ‘mental health gatherings’ in Worthing, Lewes, and Brighton, providing a safe space for dads to share their experiences and support one another. “It’s not just about the dance battles,” Flanagan added. “It’s about breaking down barriers and building a supportive community.”
So, if you’re in Brighton this Sunday, make sure to head to The Brighton Open Air Theatre for an afternoon of fun, music, and community spirit. Whether you’re a dad, a mum, or just someone who loves a good show, the “Old School Block Party” promises to be an event to remember.
